Denel Group Structure
Denel is structured as a Corporate Office, which operates as an Investment Holding company with a number of Specialised Business Entities in its business portfolio in which Denel holds all or the majority of shares. These Business Entities, of which Denel Overberg Test Range is one, operate as independent entities under their own management structures. Denel also owns a number of legacy non-core business as well as minority shares in a number of associated businesses. Abrie van der Walt
Chief Executive Officer
M.Sc (Comp. Sc.), Executive Leadership Programme (Unisa)
Mr van der Walts career includes various positions at universities before joining the Test Range in 1988. He progressed through the ranks before being appointed in 1996 on the Test Ranges Executive Management team heading the Information Processing Department. In 2005 he was appointed as Chief Executive Officer of the Test Range. Mr van der Walt is responsible for leading and managing the organisation in all aspects.
Deputy Chief Executive Officer
M. Public Administration (University of Stellenbosch), BPA (Hons), B.Tech Public Management (Peninsula Technikon), N.Dip. Public Management and Administration
Mrs Salo started her career at Cape Agulhas Municipality and held various positions in local government before joining the Test Range in 2013. As Executive Manager: Human Resources she is responsible to develop and manage systems for human resources management. She is also the senior executive responsible for championing transformation at the Test Range.
Executive Manager: Test Projects

Mr Nel is responsible for the Test Projects Department. As part of the Executive Management team he is ultimately responsible for the Test Ranges business development and sales, to ensure that test projects are effectively and safely managed to the satisfaction of clients and for test system engineering. He plays an important role in meeting the turnover objectives of the entity. Mr Nel joined the Test Range in 1988 after holding several positions at Denel Dynamics.
Executive Manager: Instrumentation
B.Sc. Hons (Inf. Sys), B.Sc. (Comp. Sc.), Nat. Diploma (Electrical Engineering), Programme in Business Leadership (UNISA), Denel Management Programme (UNISA)
Mr Hannie is Executive Manager of the Instrumentation Department. He is responsible for the maintenance, operation and upgrade of the Test Ranges instrumentation systems. He started his career as a qualified electronic technician at Rhomberg-Brsler Electronics and Eskom. Since joining the Test Range in 2000 as system analyst, he also headed the software development team before being appointed in 2012 as member of the Executive Management team.
Chief Financial Officer
B.Com (Hons) (Unisa)
Mr Pieterse served in the South African Air Force before entering the defence industry in 1981 as business systems analyst with Infoplan. Since joining the Test Range in 1987 he progressed through the ranks and was appointed on the Executive Management team in 2006. As Chief Financial Officer he is responsible for the Test Ranges finances, supply chain and liaison services.
Executive Manager: Business Development
B.Com (TRM), various SANDF courses
Mrs Johnson was employed in the South African National Defence Force for 22 years in various portfolios of which five years was spent at Defence Foreign Relations. Her valuable experience varies from international relations, military security, defence diplomacy, public relations, project management, international protocol and marketing management. She joined the Test Range during May 2015.
