Employees from Denel Overberg Test Range during their 67 minutes to make a difference on Mandela Day by doing maintenance at the Mispah School in Elim.

This year, in support of the national Mandela Day initiative, Denel Overberg Test Range focused on the Mispah School in Elim and the Crèche and Primary School in Arniston.

The Mandela Day campaign message is simple: “Mr Mandela gave 67 years of his life fighting for the rights of humanity. All we are asking is that everyone gives 67 minutes of his/her time in supporting either your chosen charity or serving your local community.” Mandela Day is a call to individuals – for people everywhere – to take responsibility for changing the world into a better place, one small step at a time, just as Mr Mandela did.

On 17 July 2015 a group of volunteers from the Test Range visited the Mispah School, for learners with special learning needs, to do maintenance work on the premises of the school and hostel. The courtyard was upgraded and painted, a jungle gym was painted and broken window panes were replaced. All the learners at the school are from previously disadvantaged communities across the Western Cape and during the school term they stay in the hostel on the premises of the school.

The Test Range personnel also donated funds. With these donations warm clothing, such as tracksuits, rain jackets, beanies and gloves, were bought for children at the Primary School in Arniston. Maintenance work was also done at the Stoute Kabouter Crèche and a TV / video machine unit was donated to them.

According to Mrs Karen Bernardo, teacher at the Stoute Kabouter Crèche, the children really appreciate the donations and the special effort with the maintenance work by the personnel from the Test Range.

The enthusiastic participation of the personnel of the Test Range demonstrates their ardent support for the less fortunate in the community.
