Employees from Denel Overberg Test Range just before they began their 67 minutes to make a difference on Mandela Day by doing maintenance work in the Arniston community.

In support of the national Mandela Day initiative, the personnel of Denel Overberg Test Range enthusiastically contributed to their neighbouring community in Arniston.

The Mandela Day campaign message is simple: “Mr Mandela gave 67 years of his life fighting for the rights of humanity. All we are asking is that everyone gives 67 minutes of their time in supporting either your chosen charity or serving your local community.” Mandela Day is a call to individuals – for people everywhere – to take responsibility for changing the world into a better place, one small step at a time, just as Mr Mandela did.

The Test Range employees opened their hearts by supporting the Denel Group initiative “2 Tiger” campaign by donating R20 per person. With the donations gloves and beanies were bought for the children of Stoute Kabouter Crèche as well as cushions and gifts for the elderly in Arniston. The donated items were handed over to the children and elderly on Monday, 21 July 2014.

A group of volunteers from the Test Range visited the Arniston community on this year’s International Mandela Day to do maintenance work at the Stoute Kabouter Crèche and playground as well as at buildings where larger groups gather in the community. A ceiling was repaired at the crèche, two new sandpits were constructed on the playground and the jungle gym, swings and sandpits were painted. The personnel also put up a gutter, replaced broken window panes and painted a building in the community.

According to Mr Norman Murtz, Chairman of the Stoute Kabouter Crèche, the community really appreciates the work that the Test Range does. The special effort on Mandela Day has made a huge difference to the school’s playground and buildings.

The enthusiastic participation of the personnel of the Test Range demonstrates their ardent support for the less fortunate in the community.
