Denel Overberg Test Range has hosted a very successful live firing exercise conducted by the Turkish Navy. The Test Range provided technical support during the live-firing of missiles and naval guns against high-speed target drones.

It was the first time the Test Range was used by the Turkish Navy and confirmed the importance of the facility located in the southern Cape as a testing arena for international clients. The commander of the Turkish Naval Forces, Admiral Blent Bostaoglu, described it as a "world-class weapon test range" and was impressed by the professional and dedicated services delivered.

The Turkish task group consisted of two frigates, a corvette and a replenishment tanker. While in the area they conducted various live ammunition firing exercises utilising aerial and seaborne targets. This was a first opportunity for the Turkish navy to fire missiles and guns against fast drone targets coming in from different directions. This enabled them to collect critically important data that contribute to their understanding of the capability of their combat systems.

With its 70km of uninhabited coastline the Denel Overberg Test Range offers a perfect test arena for test requiring a large sea area. The Range was configured to support effective communication and situation awareness to ensure safety and evaluation criteria are met.

Denel provided test support to the navy including capturing trajectory and telemetry data of the missiles in flight. Individual flight data of the mission were collected and displayed in real-time in the control room of the Test Range.

Denel also managed the entire logistical side of the operations including customs clearance, integration facilities, office infrastructure, communication lines and accommodation. Despite difficult weather conditions the exercise was completed within three days as planned.
